Before & After Bariatric Surgery Experiences
What was your experience with Dr. Guillermo Medrano?
Antonio O. Alvarez.
- My experience with Dr. Medrano was one of a friend, not a patient because that is how he made me feel. You do not find this with many other doctors, but I did with him.
- Before I met with Dr. Medrano, I weighted 370lbs. Attach is a picture of my highest weight.
- I was on 11 medications from a former PCP. From High blood pressure, diabetic, pre diabetic, Cholesterol, pre cholesterol, Asthma medicine from Albuterol to Steroid inhalers to pills for Asthma and I can not remember the rest of them. I hated to take all those pills and I am glad my PCP facility got rid of him.
- When my PCP facility changed doctors, the new doctor recognized that I could not lose the weight on my own. He also notice that my biggest problem was breathing. That doctor is the one to referred me to Dr. Medrano. Again, my PCP Facility replace the new doctor within a month and I can not remember his name. (So Sad.)

- It was embarrassing how I would speak and try to catch my breath at the same time.
- I could not walk without pain in both of my hips and both of my knees.
- I did not care how I look, I just wanted to breath and I wanted my health back. I did not do this surgery for looks, I did it for health reasons.
- Now I feel great and the new look is a plus.
- The thing I want all to know is that I can now breath normal.
- I can walk without pain especially in my hips
- I can not remember the last time I took those damn pills.
- Today, I do not take any kind of medication since my surgery date November 28, 2023.
- How can I thank someone who save my life from an early possible death date.
- How can I thank someone who cared not only about my looks, but about my health.
- How can I thank Dr. Medrano for changing my life and my health.
- There are no words strong enough nor worthy enough to say, but I will try ...
“Thank you, Hombre, Thank you.”

As Dr Medrano’s patient for over 2 years, my journey has encompassed minimal chances of survival to having regained my health and vigor.
I met Dr Medrano in October of 2022 just moments before pre-op. I was scheduled for, what I understand as an exploratory surgery and to mitigate advanced sepsis. A procedure that only Dr. Medrano and colleagues were willing to undertake. The 1st of many procedures did not go as planned, Dr. Medrano summarized the initial results as not good at all. The entire abdominal cavity was severely infected and tissue was weakened beyond salvaging. Dr Medrano’s empathy did not let this dire situation turn into an open and shut case that ends with the worst possible outcome.
I ended up in a coma for almost 2 months and my body endured about 17 procedures by Dr Medrano to merely mitigate the septic conditions.

During these procedures, Dr Medrano’s tenacity and ingenuity transcended education and even imagination. The house doctors were awestruck by Dr. Medrano’s professional temperament that yielded unprecedented results, some even taking notes. Dr. Medrano took great sympathy on my family as hospice personnel were adamant about taking over my case. He never gave up hope. Hospice was dismissed by my family and agreed on a full intestinal transplant. This would uproot my immediate family in south Texas and relocate us to Florida. Several virtual meetings with the transplant doctor cemented our move to Florida.
In my desperation I asked Dr Medrano if my stomach could “heal” itself, my esophagus had been isolated from my stomach and could not swallow anything for over 6 months. Fast forward about 2 months and a CT scan confirmed my intestinal tract was “healed”.
Nothing I write can do justice for Dr. Medrano’s performance. He restored my physical wellbeing as well as our Faith.
Myself and my family are convinced that God revealed himself to us through the hands of Dr. Medrano.
May God continue to bless Dr. Medrano and all those he touches.

I’ve been trying to lose weight for over 10 years. I’ve tried multiple programs, diet plans, medications, workout regimens, and different self-help books to no avail. I was uncomfortable in my own skin. As a healthcare professional, I know what being obese does to my health in the long-term. I was desperate for change. After my first visit/consult with Dr. Medrano, he helped me and gave me hope. He explained to me about my different surgery options and made sure that I understood this lifelong change.
He was very kind throughout my preop and made sure that I was doing well postop. He saw me in the hospital, not one of his colleagues! He was there when I was wheeled into the operating room and was the kind face that I saw before my surgery started. With all of my visits, Dr. Medrano never made me feel rushed or insignificant.
I had his undivided attention with all my visits. I am grateful to Dr Medrano and can’t say enough wonderful things about him. He’s been amazing!
