Weight Loss Surgery

Weight loss Surgery

Weight loss surgery is the single, most effective way to lose weight and to improve comorbidities associated to excess weight such as diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, amongst many others. New technological advances and oversight have made weight loss surgery safer than ever. Severe complication rates are now less than 1%. Currently weight loss surgery is considered as safe as having your gallbladder removed.

How does surgery work?

Metabolic surgeries such as sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass and duodenal switch allow your metabolism to stay active in spite of you eating less. Have you wondered why it is hard to lose weight on your own? That is because your metabolism matches the amount of energy going into your body so you don’t starve. Weight loss surgery deals with the hormones that drive “the need” to preserve the energy in situation of lower calorie intake.

Our Professional Services.

Sleeve gastrectomy

80% of the stomach is removed without altering the food pathway. The portion of the stomach removed reduces ghrelin (the hunger hormone) while increasing another set of hormones that maintain the metabolism active, some of these hormones are the ones used as weight loss medications but to a higher degree. The procedure takes less than 30 minutes

Gastric bypass

Nothing is removed, a smaller stomach pouch is created and the small bowel is re-routed in a “Y” shaped configuration where the food follows a different pathway. This food diversion creates hormonal changes similar to the sleeve gastrectomy achieving similar weight loss at 2 years. The benefit of a bypass is that it works as a reflux surgery as well.

Duodenal Switch

This surgery gave rise to the sleeve gastrectomy. Although there is also re-routing of the food pathway the way it is performed allows for more weight loss and nearly remission of type 2 diabetes (99% of patients have significant improvement). This surgery is reserved for people dealing severe amount of excess weight loss and/or uncontrolled diabetes.

Weight loss surgery and what to expect

The surgery is performed using small incisions. Most people are walking and drinking the same day after they wake up from anesthesia, we want you to be moving around so you decrease the risk of blood clots on your legs. If you are drinking enough and your pain is reasonably controlled, you are expected to be discharged the day after your surgery. This applies to all weight loss surgeries, except for some revisions. Severe complication rates for all weight loss surgeries are < 1%.
